Research funding sources are becoming increasingly complex. A plethora of targeted programs with unique eligibility criteria are often accompanied by labour-intensive accountability requirements and research granting bodies are called upon to add various levels of complexity in their funding structures. What once may have been a straight-forward operating grant proposal now requires a tangled web of collaborative, multidisciplinary and multi-institutional efforts.
Researchers must think globally, and act locally. As the federal and provincial science and technology strategies, along with institutional strategic plans continue to guide much of what is being supported, the research enterprise must ensure that its endeavours can be translated into tangible benefits to Canadians.
